An Exclusive Interview with Founder & Head Designer Zhandra Mattioli
Since launching in 2019, Oh Lola Swimwear has carved out a bold niche in the swimwear world with its micro bikinis, sheer designs, and Brazilian-inspired aesthetic. Founded by Zhandra Mattioli—a Venezuelan-born dentist turned designer—alongside her husband Ed, the brand has become synonymous with daring cuts, premium fabrics, and unapologetic confidence. We sat down with Zhandra to talk about the journey, the craft, and the philosophy behind the brand.

MySwimLook: Zhandra, you went from being a certified dentist in Caracas to founding a swimwear brand. That’s quite the leap. What sparked that transition?
It really was a leap of faith! I had a successful career as a dentist in Venezuela, but designing bikinis was always a deep passion of mine.
I’ve always been drawn to bold, standout pieces—the kind of swimwear that makes you feel powerful the moment you put it on. In 2019, my husband Ed and I decided to take the plunge and create Oh Lola.
The vision was clear from day one: swimwear that celebrates sensuality, confidence, and individuality without compromise.
MySwimLook: Where does the name “Oh Lola” come from? Is there a story behind it?
The name “Oh Lola” comes straight from my heart. It's a tribute to my grandmother, whose nickname was Lola.
She was this incredible woman: fun-loving with the best sense of humor, incredibly strong in every way that mattered, and the undisputed head of our family. She led with warmth, confidence, and this natural authority that made everyone feel both loved and inspired to step up. Growing up, watching her navigate life with such grace and boldness left a huge impression on me.
When we were dreaming up the brand, we wanted a name that captured that same spirit—playful yet powerful, feminine yet commanding, and deeply rooted in family and joy. Including “Lola” felt like the perfect way to honor her legacy and infuse the brand with those exact qualities she embodied. So “Oh Lola” became our joyful exclamation: a celebration of confident, vibrant women who lead in their own beautiful way, just like she did.

MySwimLook: Let’s get into the making of your pieces. Where is Oh Lola based, and where does production actually happen?
Oh Lola is proudly based in Miami, FL. Production takes place at our workshop in Caracas, Venezuela, where we work closely with skilled local artisans. As a close-knit family business, we have a direct, hands-on presence in the entire making process.
For fabrics, we source from top distributors, the same ones supplying luxury couture and high-end fashion brands. We love using beautiful, high-performance materials originally developed for runway pieces or luxury activewear, not traditional swim fabrics. These luxurious technical weaves and nylons give our designs that unique drape, shine, and compression that feels elevated.
Our made-to-order model is at the heart of everything we do: we produce only what’s ordered, so we carry no finished stock. This eliminates overproduction, keeps fabric waste to an absolute minimum, and ensures nothing ends up unsold or discarded.
This same responsible mindset runs through our entire operation. As we say in our About Us:
“At Oh Lola Swimwear, gender equality is a core operating standard, not a slogan. We run recurring pay-equity reviews across every role and correct gaps fast. We invest in leadership development for women on our team and in our supply chain through paid training, mentorship, and clear promotion paths. We source from workshops that meet fair-labor benchmarks, and we audit for safety, voice, and equitable pay. Our imagery and product design celebrate body diversity, and our policies support caregivers with flexible scheduling."
Ultimately, we believe beautiful swimwear should be created responsibly, and by fairly treated people, with exceptional materials, and without unnecessary waste. That’s the Oh Lola way.
MySwimLook: Your designs are heavily inspired by Brazilian beach culture. Can you tell us what specifically about that aesthetic resonates with you and how it translates into Oh Lola’s signature look?
Brazilian beach culture is all about effortless boldness—minimal coverage, maximum impact. I grew up surrounded by that energy, and it’s at the heart of everything we create.
Oh Lola’s designs draw heavily from Brazilian beach culture, where effortless boldness meets minimal coverage and maximum impact. It’s all about confidence, sensuality, and celebrating the body in a fun, unapologetic way.
But as a Venezuelan, I have to bring my roots into this too. Venezuela and Brazil share that Caribbean coastal energy, yet our identities are distinct. In Venezuela, beauty and looking amazing are deeply woven into women’s culture. We've had seven Miss Universe winners, which speaks clearly about the national pride in elegance, poise, and turning heads. Add to that our over 1,700 miles of paradisiacal coastline, plus stunning islands and archipelagos, and you get an extreme bikini culture where going to the beach all year long is a way of life.
That spirit blends seamlessly with the Brazilian aesthetic that inspires us, and we also infuse Miami, FL-inspired designs through vibrant colors, glamorous vibes, and that effortless, sun-soaked sophistication.
We often call our tiny, bold swim styles “Brazilian” for commercial appeal since Brazil is world-famous for it, but the confidence, the joy in minimalism, and the celebration of the female form? That’s pure Venezuelan heart too. It translates into Oh Lola’s signature look: pieces that feel luxurious yet liberated, with impeccable cuts, strategic coverage, that are empowering, playful, and always ready to look amazing at the beach.

MySwimLook: You offer an almost overwhelming variety of bottom cuts. How should a first-time Oh Lola customer navigate all those options, and where would you suggest she start?
Honestly, there are a lot — Side Adjustable V-String, G-String, Side Tied, Micro, Across V-Bottom, Mini Scrunch and more. But don't let the names overwhelm you. The easiest way is to ask yourself how much coverage you want. If you're going bold, start with our micros. If you want something cheeky but not too extreme, the Mini Scrunch is a great entry point. And if you prefer more coverage, we've got that too. From there, you just mix and match with any top — that's the fun part.

We’re excited for what’s next at Oh Lola! We release at least four large collections each year, each with fresh designs; some pulled from current fashion trends, others straight from my personal inspiration.
Our upcoming collection drops in the first week of April. It’s a mix of tropical minimalism and high-shine glamour, pieces that feel like endless summer nights. We’re also exploring a few empowering collaborations.
We’ll keep growing responsibly, staying true to our roots, and creating swimwear that makes women feel confident and unstoppable.
